Mark Bennister’s ongoing research explores contemporary political leadership in various contexts. It investigates the individual and structural aspects of political leadership in the legislature.
Building on his previous work, during his academic fellowship at Westminster, Dr Bennister has conducted research on the role and function of the Commons and Lords Speakers, spending time observing both in office. Dr Bennister presented his initial findings at the Political Studies Association (PSA) Parliaments and Legislatures Specialist Group Annual Conference in Belfast in November 2019 and again at the PSA Annual Conference in Nottingham in April 2019. Furthermore, he was invited to present at the PSA Parliaments and Legislatures Qualitative Methods workshop on ethnography in Parliament in May 2019
