The House of Commons Library has published an updated research briefing, authored by Dr Mark Bennister, Director of the Lincoln Parliamentary Research Centre and Richard Kelly from the Commons Library on the Prime Minister’s Evidence Sessions to the Liaison Committee. The Liaison Committee has held oral evidence sessions with the Prime Minister since 2002. The Prime Minister is scheduled to appear before the Committee on 6 July 2022. Dr Bennister held an Academic Fellowship in the House of Commons researching the Liaison Committee from 2016 until 2019.

The Liaison Committee was formally established in 1980, following the creation of departmental select committees in 1979. The Liaison Committee comprises all the chairs of select committees in the House of Commons and in the 2019 Parliament is chaired by an additional member, appointed by the House. It considers matters relating to select committees and has administrative, advisory and co-ordinating roles. It advises House authorities on select committee matters; determines which select committee reports are debated; considers issues facing committees; reviews committee practice; and takes oral evidence from the Prime Minister.
